Bacon Caramel Brownies

Craving a dessert that is salty and sweet? This decadent bacon caramel brownie incorporates our love for bacon, chocolate, and caramel in one delicious square.  Just try to resist!

Ingredient:

Bacon:

  • 8 slices bacon

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) light brown sugar

Brownies:

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL)  brown sugar

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt

Frosting:

  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) butter, softened

  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) unsweetened dark chocolate cocoa powder

  • 1 cup (250 mL) icing sugar

  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla

  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) milk

Caramel sauce:

  • 1 cup (250 mL) brown sugar, packed

  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter, cut into pieces

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) half and half

  • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract

  • salt to taste

Directions:

For the bacon:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190 °C). In a ziplock bag add bacon and brown sugar, toss to coat.

    Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and lay bacon on rack.

  2. Bake on the top rack of the oven until crisp, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

  3. Chop into large chunks and set aside.

For the brownies:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Butter an 8 x 8-inch square pan.

  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter. Remove from heat and add sugar, eggs and 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla. Stir to combine.

  3. In a bowl mix together, cocoa, flour, and salt. Add to butter and sugar mixture; stir to combine but don’t overmix.

  4. Spread batter evenly into prepared pan.

  5. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Do not overcook.

For the frosting:

  1. In a bowl combine butter, cocoa and vanilla until well mixed. Slowly add icing sugar to mixture.

  2. Add milk 1 Tbsp (15 mL) at a time until desired consistency.

  3. Frost brownies once they are completely cooled.

For Caramel Sauce:

  1. In a saucepan over low heat, combine sugar, butter, half and half, vanilla and salt. Whisking constantly until thickened, about 6 minutes.

To serve: Drizzle caramel over brownie and top with bacon. Enjoy!

Note: 

  • Caramel sauce will thicken more as it cools.
